It's been too long!

Wow!  It's been almost two years since I last blogged!  I can sincerely say that our lives have changed tremendously since my last post!  It would take forever to catch everyone up on what has transpired.  If you are family or close friends, you know the whole story.  As for my other readers, I will try to sum it up in a nutshell.

Casey and I separated in October 2011 and were divorced in January 2012.  Out of respect for our privacy I will not reveal any of the details. It was a very hard decision to make and extremely tough on the both of us.  During our split up, I became pregnant.  Unfortunately, the biological father and I did not work out but I will forever cherish the blessing that the Lord bestowed upon us.  We have a 5 month old son and he is the light of my life!

Casey and I got back together in May 2012! I was still pregnant but he was more than willing and eager to become a father figure to my baby.  My baby boy, Ayden Brady, was born in September 2012 and Casey and I remarried in November 2012!  I feel my life is complete now!  I'm the happiest I have ever been! Now, if I could only lose these extra 20 pounds of baby weight, I will be perfect! ;-)

Casey and I are soulmates; there is no doubt about that!  Despite all our tough times and time spent away from each other, we always manage to find our way back to each other.  There will be NO MORE time spent away from each other! We are together to stay! It's all uphill from here and our love will only keep getting stronger!

Healthwise, we are all fine!  Casey has not had any issues with his liver and there has been no need for any surgeries or the dreaded biopsy!!  As I start to get back into the groove of blogging, I will share some of my precious memories of my pregnancy with you, as well as share our new memories!! STAY TUNED!

Casey's Surgery

Casey had his hernia repair surgery today. They have just finished up and he is in recovery. He is doing fine, but of course, nothing is ever easy when it comes to Casey! He had two hernias instead of one!! (We always get double trouble!!) One large and one small. The large one was repaired by mesh and the small one was repaired with sutures. He's doing ok but he will be in alot of pain when he comes to!  These type of surgeries are more painful than his transplants!

He will not be able to go home today as they hinted at.  They told us maybe it would be an outpatient type surgery but that was BEFORE they opened him up and noticed the double trouble!!

Surgery Date Set

Casey will be having hernia repair surgery again on Thursday 9/1/2011.  Please keep him in your prayers, as well as his doctors, as he undergoes this tricky procedure.  I will keep you all updated.

Yet Again...

I haven't updated our blog in such a long time because everything has been going ok with Casey. BUT, about a month ago, he noticed a bulge near his incision area again.  We consulted with the Doctor and it was just as we suspected...ANOTHER incisional hernia!!  He will be scheduled for surgery sometime in September.  It doesn't bother him so he is going to wait until a few things that we already have going on have been settled.

I really have nothing new to blog about as far as my health goes.  I'm still seeing a Pyschiatrist for my anxiety and depression.  I recently had to be taken off one of my medications because it was making me lose too much weight.  Which is good and bad at the same time.  I like that I lost 20 pounds, but I don't like that I am continuing to lose weight every month and my clothesare not fitting me anymore!!  It's been two days since I quit taking this certain medication and I have already noticed an improvement in my appetite!!

All is well...

I always seem to have a long lapse in between updates and I sincerely apologize for that!  Casey's surgery went very well.  It was supposed to be outpatient, but while in surgery the doctors found another hernia a little further up from the incisional hernia he was having repaired.  He had to stay overnight and was not released until very late in the day! So, that makes a total of three hernias that he has had repaired in less than a years time!!  His body is full of mesh!  Mesh is what they use to repair the diaphragm walls so that his organs stay in their appropriate place and not poke out and cause a hernia.  This is just something that we have to be very careful with and watch that he doesn't overexhert himself or lift anything too heavy.  He will always be prone to hernias.

He is doing great liver-wise.  His blood tests are perfect and he feels great!  I wish I had his energy!  I have not been through half of what he has and yet I suffer from fatigue! :-/

Just as we thought

Just as we thought...Casey has to have surgery again! :-(  His dr. appt at Baylor Medical Center was today and they confirmed that he has an incisional hernia.  The surgery will take place in a couple of weeks.  We will have to wait for the coordinator to call us with the exact date.  The surgeon thinks that the surgery will only take about an hour and he may not need to stay the night!!  At least it doesn't require a week stay like last time!  I'm really tired of hospitals as is he...but all that matters is that he is alive by the Grace of God!!

As for the car accident; it was not his fault.  An older gentleman turned right in front him and did almost $9000 damage on our car.  Casey is ok; the air bag deployed and saved him from getting hurt!  The other guy was fine as well!  This time I am not having to drive Mr. Daisy to work and back; the other guy's insurance is paying for a rental! Thank God, because the repairs are going to take at least three weeks!!!

When it rains, it hail storms

As if finding out today's news wasn't bad enough; Casey was involved in a two vehicle car wreck today on his way back to work from the Dr. office!!  He and the other driver are fine! It was not his fault this time, THANK GOD!!!  Both cars look really bad and Casey's airbag deployed. I thank God that no one was hurt but this was very bad timing!!! :-(  Does someone have a curse on us?!

NOT AGAIN!

I was really hoping my next update wouldn't have anything to do with bad news ...BUT no such luck.  The last month or so Casey developed a golf ball sized protrusion right around where his scar from an incision is.  At first it didn't bother him, but as the days progressed it became more and more intrusive.  He called his coordinator last week and she said to see his family doctor.  Today he went to see his family doctor and he suggested he see his liver doctors...ugh!!!  But at least he informed us what it was.   It's an incisional hernia!!!  He just had a hernia surgery not too long and now AGAIN?!  His family doctor suggested it be repaired ASAP to keep his intestine from peeking through and having the blood flow pinched off to it furthermore causing more problems like infection!  When will his life ever get better?!

Sharing is Caring

Everything is going great in the life of the Fabulous Finkes!  Casey's health, liver-wise, is great!  His last set of labs were normal except for a slightly elevated cholesterol level!  I guess he needs to lay off the fried foods and junk food.  But hey, all the fried foods and junk food he's been eating has helped him gain some of his weight back!  His face is looking a little more plump as well as his other end...his ever so cute bobo has returned!!

The only thing to complain about is the cold that he had for a few days...and passed on to ME!  He decided he wanted to give me his cooties on my birthday!  The last half of my birthday yesterday was spent laying on couch with an achy body and sore throat! :-(  Thanks alot, honey dear!  I think he took the phrase "sharing is caring" a little too literal!

Now that Casey has been doing so well, I'm afraid that I won't have much to blog about!  I will try to keep my followers interested by blogging about daily activities and Casey's shenanigans and tom foolery! :-)

I'd also like to take this opportunity to invite you to follow my niece and nephew-in-law's cooking blog!  I promise you will LOVE it!!

Holy Shnikeys!

Holy Shnikeys!  I have not updated this blog since August 2010!  I apologize to those of you who actually looked forward to reading updates.  So much has happened since August of last year.  It's going to be hard to catch up but I will do my best!

In the last post I wrote about Casey's stomach being in the wrong position and I had no clue what this meant. His stomach was literally up next to his heart!!  We joke about this now; but it was not funny in the least back then.  My poor husband would hold his chest and complain that his stomach hurt! We could not comprehend why he could feel his stomach up in his chest area!!  After many tests, the doctors concluded that he had a Hiatal Hernia.  Any time an internal body part pushes into an area where it doesn't belong, it's called a hernia.  The hiatus is an opening in the diaphragm -- the muscular wall separating the chest cavity from the abdomen. Normally, the esophagus (food pipe) goes through the hiatus and attaches to the stomach. In a hiatal hernia the stomach bulges up into the chest through that opening.  Leave it to Casey to get these off the wall sicknesses!  Surgery was needed in order to repair the diaphragm and put the stomach back where it belonged.  So back we go to our 2nd home, Baylor Medical Center, for about a week.  The surgery went well and he recovered quite quickly.  But he did mention that the surgery was so much more painful than his transplant surgeries. It's just amazing what surgeons can do these days!  It was a very tricky procedure though. Due to his past surgeries, (liver transplants/cancer), the diaphragm wall was very thin, thus allowing his stomach to break through and float up into his chest.  They had to repair the diaphragm wall with mesh.  There is a possiblitly that the diaphragm wall will need to be repaired again in the future.  So far so good!  No more tummy problems thus far!

About a month or so ago, he went back to see his Oncologist for a final CT Scan to make sure that his cancer had not recurred.  Everything was PERFECT and no cancer cells were found anywhere in his body.  The labwork also stated that there were no cancer proteins in his blood!  YAY!  The doctor said if it had not recurred by now that it was more than likely not returning at all!!!  Double YAY!!  Everything was starting to look up...his tummy was fixed, no more cancer...BUT THEN...

About a month before his one year anniversary for his 2nd liver transplant, his labwork became abnormal.  His liver enzymes sky rocketed above and beyond normal and only got worse as the days passed.  When several lab tests come back abnormal the DREADED biopsy is needed!!  OMG, there are no words to express how much Casey hates biopsies.  He totally freaks out.  I don't blame him!  You should see the size  of that biopsy needle!! YIKES!!  The results of the biopsy said that  Casey was in rejection; meaning his body was rejecting the new liver.  When this happens, a 7 day hospital stay is in order.  They pumped him up with an incredible amount of steroids and immunosuppressive drugs via IV and then tapered the dosages down as the week went along.  It was really nothing to worry about, except that the medications gave him HORRIBLE headaches that brought him to tears!!!  No amount of pain medicine would alleviate the pain!  I felt so helpless not being able to help him!  I was already feeling pretty helpless not being able to stay with him at the hospital; but I had exhausted my sick time and vacation time with all his other hospital stays! :-(  His labwork got better and better as the week progressed so they let him go home!!!  But not without having ANOTHER dreaded biopsy to make sure rejection was gone!  :-(

A week after he got home, he had to go back for  follow-up labwork with his family doctor.  His liver enzymes had gone up a tad bit but nothing to be concerned about.  The transplant surgeon told him to go back for more labwork in a few days to keep our eye on it.  The next labwork he had done was worse than it was when he was first hospitalized for rejection!!!  OMG...will this poor man ever catch a break?!?!?! It was way too close to Christmas time to be having to be hospitalized again!  Soooo...it's Christmas Eve and Casey has to go back for more labwork and another dreaded biopsy!!! After the biopsy, they gave him a strong dose of IV steroids in hopes that it would help his liver enzymes go down.  He felt fine so they sent him home.   YAY!!!  We got to spend Christmas Eve with his family as planned!  BUT, we had to go back up to the hospital on CHRISTMAS MORNING for more labwork and to let a doctor look at him because they were afraid it could be some type of virus.   Go figure, the doctor got very very busy with a sick patient so we had to wait HOURS before he came to see us!!  This was not the way we wanted to spend our Christmas Day!!  The doctor finally arrived and looked him over from head to toe; he opened up his mouth and said "ahhhhhhhhh."  But doctor had nothing!  Biopsy results said it was NOT rejection!  (YAY!) The only thing left it could be was EBV (Epstein-Barr Virus).  This sounds scary, right?  Well, it scared us to death!  But good ol' google came to the rescue.  I researched it and if that is what he had; it was nothing to be concerned about!!! EBV is a lifelong dormant infection in the cells of the body's immune system. Almost everyone has this;  it just lays dormant in your body. This virus is what causes Mono.  There is nothing you can do about it but treat the symptoms...with steroids and antibiotics!  Thank God that this is all it was!  We were already thinking it was rejection again and that he was going to need another liver transplant!  There were all sorts of ideas racing through my little head!  And I wonder why I am stressed and anxious all the time!

Casey is fine now!!  He has been back on steroids ever since the rejection episode and he is gaining his weight back!!!  YAY!  He's almost at 200 pounds again!!!  He's getting his cute little (big) butt back and he's got "guns" again! :-)

Always gotta be something!!

We got the CT Scan results Saturday afternoon.  It seems that Casey's stomach is in an abnormal position?!  Anyone know what that means?  There is also an "issue" with the left side of his stomach.  We were assured it was not cancer but the coordinator could not properly interpret the results.  We will have to wait until tomorrow when he goes back to the Liver Clinic!  Ugh!  When will he ever feel better?!

Whew!

Casey's appt went very well today!  He is fine liver-wise!!!  THANK GOD!!!  Due to all his meds, he has peptic ulcer disease.  It is very common and he just needs to start taking nexium.  He also had a UTI...which is where the back pains and pain during urinating came from.  The Nexium will take a couple of weeks to kick in.  Please pray for the pain to subside a bit.  It's hard for him to cope with sometimes.  Thank you for your continued prayers!  ♥

Here we go again...

Family and friends, pardon me for not updating sooner.  We have been really busy packing and then moving and then unpacking!  Ugh!

Casey was doing fine for a long while but the beginning of July he started feeling some pain in his lower back.  It would come and go.  Then later came the pain in his stomach after drinking or eating, regardless of how small the portion.  This pain comes and goes as well.  He has some pain during urination and his urine is a dark color. (not a good sign)  He has lost 10 pounds since July since he can't eat very much without it causing pain and discomfort. The last few days he has been feeling drained and extremely tired.  These symptoms are all the same symptoms as before the 2nd liver transplant. I'm trying to remain strong and positive but I'm so scared!!!

He has an appt tomorrow at Baylor Hospital for labs and liver clinic and then a CT Scan.  Please everyone, please keep him in your prayers!  He has been through so much already.  We don't need a reoccurrence!!!

Hasn't He Been Through Enough Already?!

Both Casey and I have been really scared the last week.  He has not been feeling well.  It was a little hard for him to describe his pain but I will do my best to describe to you.  He has a knot or ball on his shoulder that radiates a sharp pain all the way down to his stomach.  He can't eat much or his stomach starts to hurt.  He had a bout of dizziness last night while sitting in his favorite red recliner!

He had to make an Oncologist Appt for today.  He goes in for a CT Scan and a bone scan and blood tests.  We are still waiting to hear from the wound specialist on the results of his xray.  On a good note, his blood tests that he has to take every two weeks with his family doctor were great!  Only his cholesterol and triglycerides are high.  We BOTH need to eat better and exercise...but who can do that when we are always stressed and tired!!!  Please keep us in your prayers!

Big Daddy is back...

Casey is doing really well!  He was released from having to wear the "murse" on Tuesday!!  That's right folks...no more wound vac!!  Yippeee!  His hernias have not been bothering him lately so he has not had to wear the "mirdle" either!  He feels like a man again!!

His hair is growing back a little faster now.  He has a nice little beard coming in that  he's trying to grow into a gotee.  He's not happy about the amount of gray hair coming in, though.  The hair on his head is growing in a lot thinner and softer!  We'll see how long he will allow it to grow before he shaves it off again!  He grew accustomed to that look.  He is starting to look normal again...his eyebrows are back as well!

His only complaint right now is that he can't sleep.  Because of the steroids he has to take, he becomes restless at nights.  He runs out of his prescription Ambien too quickly and has to wait until a month after prescribed to refill again.

Things will never ever be the way they used to be; but I can't wait until he can feel completely well!!

Update on Swelling

Casey's transplant coordinator never called back!  That's nothing new! When he went in for his wound care appt., the wound specialist said that his swelling ankles and feet were nothing to be concerned about.  If the swelling was going away at nights, then it was just his diet.  He needs to cut back on the amt of salt he consumes and drink more water.  Water sure is important in our bodies!  I wish water tasted like coke, then I would drink gallons of it everyday!  LOL!

When we finally got in touch with one of the coordinators, she confirmed what the wound specialist had said.  The swelling has not returned.  But Casey, being the stubborn man he is, did not ask about the cramps in his chest!  He said it didn't cramp at the time so he didn't think to ask!  UGH!  Men!

He had another wound care appt this morning.  His wound is getting better and better!  It's not as deep or as long.  The size of the sponge they have to insert in it for the wound vac gets smaller every visit...that's a very good sign!!  Please keep him in your prayers!  We need his wound to totally heal so that they can operate on his hernias!

When it rains it pours...

It's been very hectic the last few months.   Things seem to keep happening to us...one thing right after another.  I won't bore you with the details.  But during all this stress, one thing was certain, Casey was doing better and better each day...or so we thought.  I'm a little concerned now.  He has complained of muscle cramps in his chest around the heart...and now his ankles and feet are swollen.  He has had the cramps on and off for a while but the swelling started last night.  Neither of these symptoms is good....it either points to heart failure or liver failure.  His liver numbers have been slightly elevated for the last two labs he has done. We have contacted his doctor and coordinator and are just waiting for them to return our call. Please keep Casey in your prayers! ♥

Bye-Bye Chemo!!

Casey had his last Chemotherapy on Tuesday, May 4th!!  Can we all shout AMEN?!?!?  What should have been just a couple of chemo sessions turned into 6 chemo sessions!!  But he struggled through it like a champ!!  I'm so proud of him!  He has been thru hell and back and still managed to keep his sense of humor!!  His Oncologist met with him before chemo and told him that his lab results were great!  The certain blood protein that they look for in cancer patients was normal, like that of a cancer-free patient!!!  I was so HAPPY to hear that!!!  In 3 weeks, he will have to go back for a CT scan just to double check there is nothing still lurking around...but we are both very positive that its all gone gone!!

Casey also had a wound specialist appointment on Tuesday.  His wound is getting better but very slowly.  It is still as deep but a little less wide.  The doctor said it was looking great and didnt even have to scrape anything out of it like usual!  He still has to wear the wound vac so the murse is here to stay for another few months. He still also needs to wear the wrap that was given to him by his doctor to secure his hernias and to lessen the pain.  It looks like a girdle!  LOL!  It's a man girdle so we shall call it a "mirdle!"  So now he wears a murse and a mirdle!  SWEET!  LOL!

Possible Pain Relief Soon

If you couldn't tell, I was very frustrated when I wrote the last two blog posts. I think I have simmered down some. Casey's whole ordeal starting since September 2008 has just gone way beyond what anyone would have imagined!

He had a couple of appointments today. The first one being with the wound specialist.  His open wound has had no improvement.  It is still about 5 inches long and a couple of inches wide OPEN!  Even with the wound vac, there has not been any improvement!  This is very discouraging!  If it weren't for him having to have 6 more rounds of chemo, the healing process would have been so much quicker.

I have some bad news to share and some good news to share.  I will start with the bad and soften the blow with the good.  The bad news is that he will not be able to have any kind of surgery on his hernias, which are the cause of all his excruciating pain right now, until after his last chemotherapy AND until his wound is totally healed up!!  At the rate he's going now, he will not be able to have surgery on his  hernias until  next year!!  I just can't imagine him having to be in pain for that long!!  The good news is that the Dr. prescribed him stronger pain meds and a wrap to secure his hernias.  The doctors did not want to prescribe him anything stronger than hydrocodone because it's bad on the liver.  For those of you who pop tylenol like candy, please be careful...it is very bad on the liver!  And Advil is very bad on kidneys...just sayin'!  The wrap should help the pain alot.  The last few days he has had very bad allergies and has been coughing and sneezing like crazy!  Poor thing nearly goes down to his knees because of the pain when he sneezes!  He can even feel something protrude out when he holds his tummy to cough or sneeze.

I can't imagine what God's plan is for us.  After all that we have endured the last few years, I don't think we can handle any more bad news!

What my blog is all about

My blog is a chance for me to spill my guts about how I FEEL about everything that has been going on with my husband.  Blogging is much like writing in a diary.  I express my thoughts, opinions, concerns, and most of all my feelings about things that are going on in my life.  Doing this helps me cope; it helps me open up; and it helps me not keep my feelings bottled up to where I explode later.  This blog just so happens to be about the trials and tribulations that my husband and I have had to endure the last couple of years.  No matter who it appears I am blaming for his physical and mental anguish, of course I am THANKFUL to GOD that he is alive and am thankful that the doctors were able to save him.  The fact of the matter is that we put all of our trust and faith into doctors and hospitals.  We do not expect to come out of there with an illness that we didn't have when we first went in there because of  something that was overlooked! Casey is my everything, he is my world, and I care about his pain more than I care of my own!  Of course, people are entitled to their own opinions. If anyone disagrees with my thoughts and opinions, please keep to yourself and do not attack me personally; as this is MY blog about MY opinions, MY thoughts, and MY feelings.  And if it seems I am whining; well, so be it!  After all we have been through, we definitely have room to whine!
